Why I’m buying a Tesla
Ok, first things first. Is there a need for me to write this? No, absolutely not.
But my ego is large enough that I knew at least one person would read it, so I’m writing it.
Gas is gross
Gas is bad. Pollution is bad. And it’s kind of gross. We drill into the ground for this? C’mon, we’re killing ourselves by killing the environment. I have to leave the gas pump smelling like gas? Like, every time? Nah.
I’m not going to singlehandedly end climate change with my car but I also want to take steps to contribute less.
They rethought cars from the ground up
Here’s what I think every time I get in a car:
“Why are there so many buttons and why does every car have a slightly different configuration?”
“Well, this is just downright ugly.”
“So many buttons…what’s this icon mean?”
“Why can’t the speedometer also show the speed limit?”
“Why can’t this things be more like my phone?”
Like, why even keep trying to innovate if you’re not willing to rethink things entirely? To make it look different than last year to tell your shareholders you’re innovating? Idk.
You know what Apple did to the world? Well, Tesla’s doing the same thing for better or for worse.
In my experience when something in life becomes another thing we just tolerate, it’s ripe for innovation and innovation usually wins. So I’m going all in.
Cars are so loud
I’ve been living in a city for a while but only recently have I discovered the world is better with less of them.
The theater of masculinity that involves loud pipes or whatever makes them so loud, is unbearable and I hate it. Hobbies should be quiet.
Software is eating the world
Software is increasingly being infused with hardware. It’s invading all the stuff we use everyday. There are whole banking institutions that only exists on the internet. I mean, even John Deere pushes regular software updates. The infusion of software into hardware is the present and increasingly, the future.
I want more fun
Every time I get in a car, it’s not a particularly enjoyable experience. Granted, I’ve been driving a car from 2007. But I’ve rented these newer cars. They’re not much better. A few more features but it’s basically like they didn’t use designers at all. It’s like engineers are also designing these interfaces.
Driving is something I have to do to get somewhere. And I’m tired of it being just that. I want to enjoy driving again.
If 2020 showed us nothing else, it’s that life needs more fun. We gotta drive, why not make it fun?
